New Study Shows Testosterone Therapy in Women Significantly Improves Energy, Mood, and Quality of Life

Long Considered Strictly a Men’s Health Hormone, TRT Emerges as Meaningful Solution for Menopause and Women’s Health as Access to Care Expands

NASHVILLE, Tenn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Joi + Blokes, a telehealth platform specializing in diagnostic testing, personalized medicine, and hormone and menopause care, today announced the publication of a new peer-reviewed study demonstrating that testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) in women is associated with significant improvements in energy, mood, cognitive function, and overall quality of life.

The study was carried out by Dr. Ben Bikman, PhD, and Dr. Paul Reynolds, PhD, at Brigham Young University and published in the Journal of Personalized Medicine. They analyzed outcomes from 332 women between the ages of 27 and 78 receiving individualized testosterone therapy. Results showed broad improvements across eight symptom domains, with 84% of participants reporting increased energy and nearly 90% reporting improved quality of life.

For decades, testosterone has been widely prescribed and normalized for men’s hormonal health, while women have faced significant barriers to access and lack of inclusion in research studies. Most women have also struggled to find clinicians willing to evaluate or treat hormone-related symptoms beyond traditional frameworks. The impetus of the study was to normalize conversations around testosterone in women and encourage broader access to care, as well as prompt further research on the topic to explore additional benefits.

“This study is about changing common narratives in women’s hormonal healthcare,” said Katy Whalen, co-founder of Joi + Blokes. “Women have been underserved in this area for far too long. They come to us saying the same thing: ‘I just don’t feel like myself anymore.’ What we’re seeing, and now validating, is that testosterone plays a much bigger role in how women feel day to day than previously acknowledged.”

While testosterone therapy has historically been associated with libido support and sexual health, the findings point to a broader and more meaningful impact:

  • Energy/fatigue was the most improved symptom (84.3%)
  • Mood-related symptoms such as depression and irritability improved in over 65% of participants
  • Cognitive improvements, including memory and concentration, increased over time
  • Energy and mood ranked above sexual desire as the most meaningful benefits

“These results reinforce what we hear from patients every day,” said Dr. Melissa Loseke, DO, Medical Director at Joi + Blokes. “This isn’t just about libido. It’s about restoring energy, improving mood, and helping women feel like themselves again.”

In addition to symptom improvements, participants demonstrated favorable changes in key biomarkers associated with overall health, including reductions in triglycerides (a marker of metabolic and cardiovascular health), improvements in hemoglobin (linked to energy and oxygen delivery), and enhanced hormone balance as reflected by SHBG levels.

The origins of Joi + Blokes’ approach to women’s hormone optimization are deeply personal, as TRT played a significant role in Whalen’s own hormonal health journey long before it was widely discussed as a treatment for women.

These findings reinforce Joi + Blokes’ commitment to validating the care they provide, improving access to personalized hormone therapies, and helping more women overcome barriers to treatment and feel like themselves again.
