The study, conducted by Morning Consult, highlights the ongoing mental health challenges in the U.S.
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa–(BUSINESS WIRE)–A new study indicates that mental health struggles continue to affect Americans, especially younger adults. The study was commissioned by RedBox Rx, a telehealth and online pharmacy provider that specializes in mental health treatment, and conducted by Morning Consult, a global intelligence company.
Conducted online in December 2023, the study surveyed 2,208 adults from across the U.S. Data were weighted to approximate a target sample of adults based on gender, education, age and race. Results from the full survey have a margin of error of +/-2 percentage points.
Mental health continues to be a widespread challenge
Findings from the study highlighted the significant mental health challenge among U.S. adults. Nearly three out of four respondents (73%) reported they struggled with mental health in 2023. Additionally, 29% of the total respondents reported they struggled more than usual with mental health.
“Mental health remains a struggle for many Americans,” said Dr. Daniel Fick, RedBox Rx’s chief medical officer. “The findings from this study demonstrate that more resources and support are needed to help individuals manage their mental health, especially younger adults. At RedBox Rx, we are focused on fulfilling this need by offering easy-to-access, affordable, discreet and convenient telehealth care and treatment for those struggling with mental health.”
The study also found that recent life experiences, whether relational or personal, were linked to the state of one’s mental health. Those suffering from worsening mental health were more likely to have experienced the following:
Lack of a healthy home environment
Breakdown in a relationship with a close family member
Lack of a healthy work environment
Being a victim of verbal/emotional abuse
Attended college/university
Being a victim of physical violence
More struggles reported in younger adults
The study also indicated that mental health challenges varied among age groups. According to the study, 41% of Gen Zers and 36% of Millennials reported more mental health struggles in the past year compared to 21% of adults ages 45 and older.
Loneliness and failure to achieve life goals were also linked to worsening mental health, most notably in younger adults. In the study, 53% of Gen Zers reported feelings of loneliness and 52% reported feelings of failure to achieve life goals.
Barriers to care
Only 37% of those with consistent or worsening mental health struggles have sought professional care, such as therapy or medications in the past year, according to the study. Those not seeking care tend to downplay their situation or cite the cost of care as barriers.
RedBox Rx is focused on removing barriers to mental health treatment through its discreet, low-cost service model and continued educational efforts to increase awareness about mental health struggles and treatments.
“Telehealth offers an effective and convenient way for patients to easily access care for mental health conditions,” said Dr. Fick.
