March 26, 2025 – A recent McKinsey survey reveals that 85% of healthcare leaders are actively exploring or have already adopted generative AI (gen AI) technologies to improve operational efficiency and patient interactions.
The survey, conducted in December 2024, included 150 executives from payer organizations, health systems, and healthcare services and technology groups. Findings indicate a significant shift from initial proofs of concept to full-scale implementation of gen AI solutions. Notably, 61% of respondents are partnering with third-party vendors to develop customized AI applications, while 20% are building capabilities in-house, and 19% are purchasing off-the-shelf solutions.
Healthcare leaders identified administrative efficiency and clinical productivity as primary areas where gen AI can deliver substantial value. Additionally, opportunities in patient engagement and IT infrastructure were highlighted, suggesting a broad spectrum of potential applications for the technology.
Despite the enthusiasm, organizations acknowledge challenges in scaling gen AI, particularly concerning risk management, data privacy, and regulatory compliance. Developing robust governance frameworks is deemed essential to address these concerns effectively.
As the healthcare industry continues to integrate gen AI, strategic partnerships and a focus on risk mitigation are expected to play pivotal roles in harnessing the technology’s full potential to enhance patient care and operational performance.
