HME is protecting tracheostomized patients from heat and humidity loss resulting from breathing through artificial airways which bypass the mouth, nose and pharynx. The translucent moulded plastic housing contains a hygroscopic material that traps the heat and moisture from the expired air and return it to the inspired air.
FHME is a combined heat and moisture exchanger (HME) and bacterial/viral filter for humidification and bacterial/viral filtration during anaesthesia and intensive care.
